Every year Pinterest releases Pinterest Predicts—a trend forecasting series based on what the people of Pinterest are searching for. In 2024 the social-media-turned-search-engine site sensed that this year’s leading wedding trend would be 1970s vibes🌻. Groovy baby.
Pinterest revealed that:
- searches for ‘groovy wedding’ were up 170%
- searches for ‘retro wedding theme’ were up by 80%.
Vegas is flush with retro style. For starters, we probably have more neon than 90% of the world. Beyond that, some monumental moments in Vegas history happened in the 70s. Siegfried and Roy brought magic and lions to the stage. Broadway shows arrived courtesy of the newly opened Union Plaza. Hunter S. Thompson released Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
As favored florists for Vegas’ hottest wedding coordinators and venues, we’re privileged to create flowers for many vintage-themed weddings. So, if you’re coming to the Wedding Capital of the World to get hitched, then we’ve got tips-a-plenty to make sure your fall season nups are off the hook rather than a jive turkey.
First, choose your 1970s wedding style
Every decade has more than one style so there’s a handful of iconic ways you might rep the 1970s at your wedding.
Go totally disco
Set the disco scene with mirror balls and midriffs, high-waisted pants and jumpsuits, bright florals and light-up dance floors.
Tune into hippie vibes
Go full flower power with floral crowns, corsages, and hair pieces. As the 70s heralded the start of the Earth movement (the first ever Earth Day was in April 1970) complement peace signs and boho threads with rich, natural tones.
Be punk and proud
Add some anarchic energy to your wedding. Choose outfits that put tats on full display. Wear leather or faded denim. And why not toss in some tartan and studs for good measure?
Saddle up for some retro-western
And ride into the sunset. Style your wedding with Stetsons and cowboy boots. Channel the frontier spirit with desert accents and dusty, natural tones in your color palette.
Find theme-friendly vendors
Once you’ve settled on your perfect 70s style, think about how far you want to take your theme. For some couples, incorporating it into the color scheme is enough. For others, the theme will shape every aspect of their day including:
- what the bridal party wears
- the wedding stationery
- décor styling and colors
- music and playlists
- the food and drink
- the ceremony and reception venues
- what they ask their guests to wear.
Some Vegas vendors are keen to get on board with this. Electric Sugar Elopements is a perfect example. But not every Vegas wedding vendor is equipped or wants to be part of a themed wedding.
Some venues, caterers, florists, photographers, or celebrants have a set aesthetic and branding. If you want every aspect to tie into your theme, you’ll need to ask vendors if they’re happy to accommodate you. Then ask for examples of their work to prove they’re up to the task.
For example, will your officiant be open to wearing an outfit style or color that fits your carefully curated 70s vibe? Can your catering company prepare food or mix cocktails that reflect the era? Will your photographer shoot or edit your images so they look vintage?
If you already have a shortlist of preferred wedding vendors, check their website or social media to see if they’re open to themed weddings. If this isn’t clearly stated there, contact them to check before you go ahead and book.
Alternatively, you can type ‘1970s themed [SERVICE YOU WANT] Las Vegas’ into a search engine. We tried this with ‘1970s themed food catering Las Vegas’ and quickly found several results for catering companies offering bespoke menus full of fave foods from the decade, like deviled eggs and pigs in a blanket. Yum!
Retro venues in Las Vegas
Booking the venue is one of your bigger wedding planning decisions. And when it comes to styling a themed wedding, you have a couple of options for finding the right venue.
Your first option is to book a blank canvas venue, such as an indoor studio space or hall. You can then dress and decorate it however you wish. (Or hire a wedding stylist and planner to do it for you.)
It’s also worth highlighting that fall weather in Nevada is generally pretty good. So you may prefer somewhere outdoors such as Dry Lake Bed or Red Rock Canyon. (Both are brilliant options if you’re going for the hippie or retro-western vibe.)
The second option is to book somewhere that’s already oozing with 70s chic. Vegas isn’t short of these venues.
- The Neon Museum
- Eldorado Canyon (in particular the Big Barn/Ghost Town site)
- Dry Lake Bed
- Fergusons Downtown
- The Punk Rock Museum
- Sure Thing Chapel
- A Little White Chapel
- One of Vegas’ roller skate rinks (a fun option for bachelor/bachelorette parties)
Matching color palettes and floral décor
While psychedelic colors shaped the 60s, the 70s were largely dominated by natural earth tones. Think burnt orange, avocado, peach, amber, rich earth browns, magnolia, and mustard yellows.
Disco style was the exception. Pinks, purples, blues, and black and white ruled there.
Providing your vendors with a color palette for your 70s themed wedding will help them understand and realize your vision.
Canva has a really simple color palette generator that lets you type in a keyword (in this case ‘retro’ or ‘1970’) and it returns several suggestions. If you’ve got an eye for design then you may want to play with the ColorMagic app.
As we’re a Las Vegas florist, we’re going to focus on how to express your theme through flowers—in terms of color and design. Here’s how it might look.
Extra accessories to dress your ceremony site
Flowers are just one superb way to express your theme. Other ideas that work well for a 70s wedding include:
- rugs, especially Turkish rugs. If they’re faded or threadbare, even better
- disco balls and neon signs
- accents of lace and velvet
- flower power with extra flower décor
- peace and love signs.
Get inspired by 70s people
Get a sense of the era by speaking to the people you know who lived through it. (Everyone loves an excuse to pull out old photo albums and take a trip down memory lane.)
Talking to close friends and family may unearth a personal experience or happy memory that you want to acknowledge during your special day. For example, a song that sums up the era for them, or an item of jewelry or clothing they regularly wore. You could recreate the wedding flowers they had if they got hitched in the 70s, using blooms that were popular back then.
Even though this is your day, finding little ways to include your nearest and dearest guests can make it feel even more special for them, too.
Once you’ve got a sense of your theme you’re in a strong position to start choosing what flowers you’ll need for your day.
